Japan in December 2026: Weather, Illuminations, Events and What to Pack

Japan in December 2026: Weather, Illuminations, Events and What to Pack

Last updated: 9 October 2026. Event dates for December 2026 are based on organisers’ announcements and past patterns; recheck each official site a week or two before you go.

The short answer: December is one of the most underrated months to visit Japan. The first half of the month is cool, dry and sunny in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the last autumn leaves are still hanging on, and every city switches on its winter illuminations. The second half brings Christmas markets, the start of ski season and the busy New Year build-up, when prices jump and many places close from 29 December.

If you are coming from Indonesia, the main thing to plan around is the cold. Tokyo in December feels like a chilly morning in Dieng or the Bromo crater rim all day long, and Hokkaido is well below freezing. Pack properly and December is a very comfortable month to explore.

Is December a Good Time to Visit Japan?

For most first-timers, yes, especially from 1 to about 20 December. Here is the honest trade-off.

ProsCons
Clear, dry weather on the Pacific side (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto)Short days: the sun sets around 16:30 in Tokyo
Late autumn leaves in Kyoto and Tokyo in the first weekCold mornings and evenings, near freezing in Kyoto
Winter illuminations and Christmas markets everywhereFlights from Indonesia peak from mid-December (school holidays, Natal and Tahun Baru)
Ski resorts open and snow festivals begin in HokkaidoMany shops, restaurants and museums close from 29 December to 3 January
Early December is off-peak for hotels in KyotoShinkansen and hotels sell out around 26–31 December

Best window: 1–20 December. You get the illuminations and the clear weather before the year-end rush, at prices close to the low season. For a full month-by-month comparison, see our guide to the best time to visit Japan.

Japan Weather in December by City

Average December temperatures from the Japan Meteorological Agency (1991–2020 normals, rounded). Jakarta, for comparison, sits at around 25–32°C in December.

CityAverage highAverage lowWhat it feels like
Sapporo (Hokkaido)2°C-4°CSnow on the ground, icy pavements
Tokyo12°C4°CCrisp and sunny, cold after dark
Kyoto12°C3°CCold mornings, rare light snow late in the month
Osaka12°C5°CSimilar to Tokyo, slightly milder
Fukuoka13°C5°CCool, more cloud than Tokyo
Naha (Okinawa)21°C16°CMild, light jacket only

Tokyo usually has fewer than 10 rainy days in December, which makes it one of the driest months of the year there. The Sea of Japan side (Kanazawa, Niigata, Tohoku) is the opposite: grey, wet and snowy.

Best Winter Illuminations in December

Japan’s illumination season runs from November to February, and December is when every display is switched on at once. Most are free; the big theme-park style ones charge entry.

Tokyo: Marunouchi, Roppongi and Ebisu

Tokyo’s displays are free and easy to fit into an evening. The Marunouchi Illumination lines Naka-dori, a short walk from Tokyo Station, with about 1.2 km of champagne-gold trees, usually from mid-November to mid-February. Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka puts blue and white lights on the slope below Tokyo City View, normally until 25 December, and Yebisu Garden Place hangs a giant Baccarat chandelier in its courtyard. Go after 17:00 on a weekday to avoid the worst crowds.

Nabana no Sato (Mie, near Nagoya)

The most famous illumination in Japan, with a light tunnel of around 200 metres and a huge LED landscape that changes theme every year. The 2026–27 season starts on 17 October 2026. Entry has been around ¥2,500–3,000 including a voucher you can spend inside, and visits on 23–25 December need tickets bought in advance. It is about an hour by bus from Nagoya, so it pairs well with a Shinkansen stop on the way between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Ashikaga Flower Park (Tochigi)

Ashikaga’s “Flower Fantasy” uses millions of LEDs shaped into wisteria trellises, flower fields and a glowing lake. The 2026–27 season runs from 17 October 2026 to 14 February 2027 (closed 31 December), with adult tickets at ¥1,500. It is about two hours from central Tokyo by train, and JR Ashikaga Flower Park Station is right next to the entrance.

Sapporo White Illumination (Hokkaido)

Japan’s oldest illumination fills Odori Park with light sculptures in the snow. The Odori Park section usually runs from late November to 25 December, while the Ekimae-dori and station venues continue into the new year. Combine it with the Christmas market below and some time on the slopes.

Note on Kobe Luminarie: older guides still list it in December, but since 2024 it has been held in late January. Guides currently list 29 January to 7 February 2027, so don’t plan a December trip around it.

Christmas Markets and Christmas in Japan

Christmas is not a public holiday in Japan. It is a commercial, romantic season: couples book dinners on Christmas Eve, and families queue for KFC “Christmas chicken” and strawberry shortcake. That makes it fun to watch, but restaurants are packed on 24 December.

European-style markets pop up from late November until 25 December:

  • Munich Christmas Market, Sapporo: in Odori Park during the White Illumination, with mulled wine and German sausages.
  • Tokyo Christmas Market: the 2025 edition ran at Jingu Gaien (21 Nov – 25 Dec) and Shiba Park, with paid weekend entry.
  • Roppongi Hills Christmas Market: free, under a glass roof, so it works on rainy days.
  • Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse: a big tree and wooden stalls by the harbour.

Mulled wine (Glühwein) is the drink of choice, so Muslim travellers should look for the hot chocolate and apple cider stalls instead. Our Muslim-friendly Japan guide covers halal food near these areas.

December Festivals and Year-End Traditions

December is quieter for big matsuri than summer, but it has two of the country’s most impressive traditional festivals and a series of New Year rituals worth seeing. For the full calendar, see our list of traditional Japanese festivals by month.

Chichibu Night Festival (2–3 December, Saitama)

One of Japan’s three great float festivals and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Six lantern-covered floats, some weighing more than 10 tonnes, are hauled through town and up the steep Dango-zaka slope on the night of 3 December, with winter fireworks overhead. It is about 80 minutes from Ikebukuro on the Seibu Limited Express. Trains are packed on the 3rd; 2 December is calmer.

Kasuga Wakamiya On-matsuri (15–18 December, Nara)

Held every year since 1136, this is Nara’s biggest festival. The main day is 17 December, when a costumed procession of samurai, court officials and dancers leaves the Nara Prefectural Office at around noon, followed by hours of ancient court music and dance at Kasuga Taisha’s temporary shrine. It is free and makes an easy day trip from Kyoto or Osaka.

Year-End Markets and New Year’s Eve in Kyoto

Kyoto’s monthly temple markets have special year-end editions: Shimai-Kobo at To-ji on 21 December and Shimai-Tenjin at Kitano Tenmangu on 25 December, both full of New Year decorations, pickles and antiques. On 31 December (Omisoka), temples ring their bells 108 times at midnight in a ritual called joya no kane. Chion-in’s 70-tonne bell, rung by a team of 17 monks, is the most famous; queues are long and entry rules change each year, so check the temple’s notice in December.

Kyoto in Early December: Last Leaves and Possible Snow

Kyoto’s autumn colour peaks in late November, but gardens like Tofuku-ji, Eikan-do and the Arashiyama hills often still have red maples in the first week of December, with smaller crowds. A snowy Kinkaku-ji is the dream shot; it happens a few times each winter, more often in January and February than in December, so treat it as a bonus rather than a plan.

Ski Season Starts in December

Most big resorts open between late November and mid-December, depending on snowfall. Niseko and Furano in Hokkaido usually have the most reliable early snow, while Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen in Nagano build up through the month. Early December can mean limited runs; the deep powder Japan is famous for usually arrives from late December into January. Compare resorts in our guide to the best ski resorts in Japan.

Okinawa: The Warm Option in December

If the cold puts you off, Okinawa stays at around 16–21°C. It’s too cool for most people to swim, but fine for beaches, castles and island hopping. Humpback whale-watching tours from Naha and the Kerama Islands usually start in late December or January.

The Year-End Rush: What Closes and When

The New Year holiday is the most important family holiday in Japan. Government offices close from 29 December to 3 January, and many independent restaurants, museums and some attractions follow a similar schedule.

DatesWhat to expect
1–20 DecemberNormal opening; best value for hotels and trains
21–28 DecemberBusier; Christmas markets end on 25 December
26–31 DecemberShinkansen and flights packed as people travel home
29 December – 3 JanuaryMany museums, small restaurants and offices closed; convenience stores, big chains, department stores (from 1 or 2 Jan) and major shrines stay open
1–3 JanuaryHuge crowds at Meiji Jingu, Fushimi Inari and other shrines for hatsumode

Shinkansen tip: during the year-end peak, Tokaido Shinkansen Nozomi trains are all reserved seats, so you can’t just walk on. If you use a rail pass, reserve seats early or choose Hikari trains. Our JR Pass guide explains seat reservations step by step.
