How Much Does a Japan Trip Cost from Indonesia? 7-Day Budget (2027)

Last updated: 8 October 2026. Prices converted at about Rp113 per ¥1.
The short answer: a 7-day trip to Japan from Indonesia costs about Rp16–18 juta per person on a backpacker budget, Rp25–28 juta mid-range, and Rp40 juta or more if you want comfortable hotels and nicer meals. Return flights are the biggest single cost, followed by hotels. Everything else, from ramen to trains, is cheaper than most Indonesians expect.
The figures below are for one adult, 7 days and 6 nights, on a classic first-timer route: Tokyo (3 nights), Kyoto (2 nights) and Osaka (1 night), flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka. All prices were checked in October 2026, but the yen moves, so use the yen amounts as your anchor and convert again before you book.

Flights from Indonesia to Japan

Return flights usually make up 35–45% of the total. There are direct flights from Jakarta to Tokyo (Haneda and Narita) and from Bali to Tokyo, and budget routes with one stop via Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Manila.
| Route type | Typical return fare (economy) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Full-service direct, Jakarta–Tokyo | from about Rp10.5–11.6 juta | Garuda Indonesia promo fares for late 2026 and early 2027; JAL and ANA are similar |
| Low-cost with one stop | about Rp6–8 juta | AirAsia via Kuala Lumpur or Scoot via Singapore; baggage and meals cost extra |
| Open-jaw (into Tokyo, out of Osaka) | similar to a return | Saves a Shinkansen ride back to Tokyo |
Cheapest months to fly: mid-January to February (outside Chinese New Year), June, and early December. The most expensive periods for Indonesians are school holidays (late June to mid-July), the Lebaran period and Christmas to New Year.
Good to know: Japan’s departure tax rose from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 on 1 July 2026. It is already included in your ticket price, so you do not pay it at the airport.
Visa and Entry Costs
| Option | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visa waiver for e-passport holders | Free via the online JAVES system | Up to 15 days per visit; registration valid for 3 years or until the passport expires |
| Visa waiver through the visa centre (JVAC) | Service fee only | Same waiver, but you pay the centre’s handling fee |
| Single-entry tourist visa | about ¥15,000 (around Rp1.7 juta) plus service fee | Fee rose fivefold on 1 July 2026; only needed if you don’t have an e-passport or stay longer than 15 days |
If you still have an old non-chip passport, it is worth renewing to an e-paspor before your trip. The waiver saves you well over a million rupiah and a lot of paperwork.
Other small costs: an eSIM with 10–20 GB for a week costs about Rp100,000–250,000, and travel insurance for a week in Japan costs roughly Rp300,000–600,000.
Accommodation Costs

| Type | Price per night (2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel dorm bed | ¥3,000–5,000 | Solo backpackers |
| Capsule hotel | ¥3,500–6,500 | Solo, one or two nights |
| Business hotel (Toyoko Inn, APA, Dormy Inn) | ¥8,000–15,000 per room | Couples and friends sharing a twin |
| Mid-range or design hotel | ¥15,000–30,000 per room | More space, better location |
| Ryokan with dinner and breakfast | ¥20,000–50,000 per person | One special night |
Tips that save the most:
- Share a twin room. A ¥12,000 business hotel room split between two people costs less per person than many hostels.
- Stay near a station, not in the centre. Ueno and Asakusa in Tokyo, and the area around Shin-Osaka in Osaka, are cheaper than Shinjuku or Namba and only a few stops away.
- Kyoto is the most expensive city for hotels in spring and autumn. Kyoto also charges a lodging tax of ¥200 to ¥400 per person per night for most budget and mid-range rooms, more for luxury stays. Some travellers sleep in Osaka and visit Kyoto as a day trip, since the two are under 30 minutes apart.
Transport Costs

| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Narita Airport to Tokyo, Keisei Skyliner | ¥2,580 (¥2,310 online) |
| Narita Airport to Tokyo, Narita Express | ¥3,070 |
| Narita Airport to Tokyo, Access Express (slower) | ¥1,280 |
| Tokyo Subway Ticket, 72 hours | ¥2,000 |
| Shinkansen Tokyo to Kyoto (Nozomi, reserved) | about ¥14,000 |
| Kyoto to Osaka, JR Special Rapid | about ¥580 |
| Osaka to Kansai Airport (Nankai or JR) | ¥1,000–3,000 |
| Daily local trains and buses with an IC card | ¥800–1,500 |
Do you need a Japan Rail Pass? For a 7-day Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip that flies out of Osaka, usually no. The 7-day pass costs ¥50,000 on the official JR site, while a one-way Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto plus local trains adds up to about ¥20,000–25,000. The pass only pays off if you also go further, such as Hiroshima, Kanazawa or a return to Tokyo. Our guide on whether the Japan Rail Pass is worth it has the full calculation.
Get an IC card: load a Suica, PASMO or ICOCA, or add one to your phone, and tap through ticket gates in every major city. Tourists can also buy a Welcome Suica at Narita and Haneda airports.
Food Costs

Eating well in Japan is cheaper than in Singapore and often comparable to a mid-range mall restaurant in Jakarta.
| Meal | Typical price | In rupiah |
|---|---|---|
| Konbini breakfast (onigiri and drink) | ¥400–700 | Rp45,000–80,000 |
| Bowl of ramen or udon | ¥900–1,500 | Rp100,000–170,000 |
| Halal ramen or curry | ¥1,200–1,800 | Rp135,000–205,000 |
| Conveyor-belt sushi meal | ¥1,500–3,000 | Rp170,000–340,000 |
| Yakiniku or wagyu dinner | ¥4,000–10,000 | Rp450,000–1,130,000 |
| Bottle of water or tea | ¥120–180 | Rp14,000–20,000 |
Daily food budget: about ¥3,500 if you eat konbini breakfasts and simple lunches, ¥6,000 for sit-down meals, and ¥10,000 or more for wagyu and sushi dinners. Muslim travellers should budget a little extra, as halal-certified restaurants tend to cost more. See our guide to halal food and prayer rooms in Japan for where to eat.
Attraction and Activity Costs

Many of Japan’s best sights are free or cheap. Fushimi Inari Shrine, Meiji Jingu, Senso-ji and Dotonbori cost nothing, and most Kyoto temples charge ¥400–1,000.
| Attraction | Typical adult price |
|---|---|
| Fushimi Inari, Senso-ji, Meiji Jingu | Free |
| Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Kyoto | ¥500 |
| Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto | ¥500 |
| Tokyo Skytree observation deck | about ¥2,000–3,500 (varies by date) |
| teamLab Planets, Tokyo | about ¥3,600–4,200 (varies by date) |
| Universal Studios Japan, Osaka | about ¥8,600–11,000+ (varies by date) |
