Japan Visa Waiver for Indonesians: e-Passport Registration Guide (2026)
Last updated: 12 October 2026. Rules can change at short notice, so confirm the current details on the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia’s website before you apply.
The short answer: if you hold an Indonesian e-paspor (the one with the chip symbol on the cover), you can visit Japan for up to 15 days without a visa. You just need to register your passport once before you fly, and the online registration is free. One registration covers every trip for 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
If you have an older non-chip passport, or you want to stay longer than 15 days, you need a regular tourist visa. Since 1 July 2026 that costs ¥15,000 for a single entry, about Rp1.65 juta, five times the old price. For most travellers, renewing to an e-paspor is now cheaper than paying for a visa.
Visa Waiver vs Tourist Visa at a Glance
| e-Passport visa waiver | Single-entry tourist visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it’s for | Indonesian e-paspor holders | Non-chip passports, or stays over 15 days |
| Cost | Free online (service fee if you use the visa centre) | ¥15,000 (about Rp1.65 juta) plus service fee |
| Maximum stay | 15 days per visit | Up to 90 days |
| Validity | 3 years or until the passport expires | One trip, usually used within 3 months |
| Processing | About 2–4 working days online | About 5–7 working days |
| Where | Online, or at the Japan Visa Application Centre | Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC) |
| Allowed activities | Tourism, visiting family, short business meetings | Tourism, visiting family, short business meetings |
Neither option lets you work or study in Japan. Paid work, internships and courses longer than a short visit need a different visa.
Step 1: Check That You Have an e-Paspor

Look at the front cover of your passport. An e-paspor has a small chip symbol (a rectangle with a circle inside) under the word PASPOR.
Before you register, also check that:
- Validity: your passport is valid for the whole trip. Most airlines and agents recommend at least 6 months left.
- Name: the name on your flight booking matches the passport exactly.
- Children: each child needs their own e-paspor and their own registration.
If your passport is the older paper type, you can apply for an e-paspor at a Kantor Imigrasi through the M-Paspor app. Compare that cost and time with the ¥15,000 visa fee before you decide.
Step 2: Register Online Through JAVES (Free)
Since 27 March 2023, Indonesians can register for the visa waiver online through JAVES (the Japan Visa Exemption System), run by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Find the link on the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia’s visa page, so you don’t land on an unofficial lookalike site.
- Create an account on the JAVES site with your email address.
- Fill in your details exactly as they appear on your passport.
- Upload scans of your passport cover, the data page and any endorsement page. Use clear, uncropped colour scans.
- Submit the application. Registration is free; any site asking for payment is not the official one.
- Wait about 2–4 working days. You will receive a Visa Exemption Registration Notice by email.
- Save the notice. It is electronic, so you show it from your phone at check-in and at immigration in Japan.
Our advice: register at least two weeks before your flight. Processing times stretch before Lebaran, school holidays and the December peak season.
Step 2 (Alternative): Register at the Visa Centre

If you prefer to do it in person, you can submit your e-paspor and the registration form at the Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC), run by VFS Global, in Jakarta or one of its branches in other major cities. The Embassy itself only handles diplomatic passports and special cases.
The in-person route takes around 3–5 working days and puts a visa waiver sticker in your passport. The waiver is still free, but JVAC charges a service fee, and you need to leave your passport with them while it is processed. For most people, the online route is quicker and cheaper.
Step 3: Prepare for Departure

Airline staff in Indonesia check your eligibility before you board, so have these ready at the check-in counter:
| Document | Format | Why |
|---|---|---|
| e-Paspor | Original | Must be the same passport you registered |
| Visa Exemption Registration Notice | On your phone (keep data or Wi-Fi on) | Proves the waiver is approved |
| Return or onward ticket | E-ticket | Shows you will leave Japan within 15 days |
| Hotel bookings | Screenshots or PDFs | Immigration may ask where you are staying |
| Proof of funds | Bank app or recent statement | Occasionally requested |
| Visit Japan Web QR codes | On your phone | Speeds up immigration and customs on arrival |
Visit Japan Web is Japan’s free online form for immigration and customs. Fill it in a few days before you fly and you get QR codes to scan at the arrival hall instead of writing paper cards on the plane.
Remember that Japan’s departure tax of ¥3,000 (raised from ¥1,000 on 1 July 2026) is usually already included in your air ticket. For the full trip budget in rupiah, see how much a Japan trip costs from Indonesia.
Step 4: Arriving in Japan

At Haneda, Narita, Kansai or Fukuoka, follow the signs for Foreign Nationals at immigration:
- Scan your Visit Japan Web QR code, or hand over a paper disembarkation card.
- Give your fingerprints and a photo at the immigration booth.
- Answer short questions about your trip if asked: purpose, length of stay and hotel.
- Get your landing permission. The officer gives you a sticker marked Temporary Visitor with a 15-day limit.
- Clear customs with the Visit Japan Web customs QR code at the e-gates.
The 15 days start on the day you land. If you arrive on the 1st, you must leave by the 15th. Overstaying, even by one day, can lead to deportation and a ban on returning to Japan.

Flying into Osaka Instead of Tokyo

The process is the same at Kansai International Airport, which is closer to Kyoto and Osaka and is served from Indonesia by direct or one-stop flights. Many travellers fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka on an open-jaw ticket. That works fine with the waiver, as long as your total stay is 15 days or less. A rail pass can help on longer routes; our Japan Rail Pass guide explains when it pays off.
What Can You Do in 15 Days?

Fifteen days is plenty for a first trip. A typical 7–10 day route covers Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kyoto and Osaka, with time left for a day trip to Nara or a night in a hot-spring town. To pick the right season, read our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Japan, or our Japan in December guide if you are travelling over the year-end holidays.
If you need more than 15 days, you cannot extend the waiver inside Japan. Apply for a tourist visa before you go instead.
Common Mistakes That Get Travellers Refused
| Mistake | How to avoid it |
|---|---|
| Registering a non-chip passport | Check for the chip symbol on the cover first |
| Renewing your passport after registering | A new passport needs a new registration |
| Blurry or cropped scans | Scan flat, in colour, with all four corners visible |
| Name on ticket differs from passport | Book flights with the exact passport spelling |
| Registering a few days before the flight | Allow at least two weeks |
| Paying an unofficial “JAVES” or “JESTA” website | Use the link from the Embassy of Japan’s own site |
| Planning a 16-day trip | Count the arrival day as day 1 |

What Is JESTA and Will It Change This?
Japan plans to launch JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization), a pre-travel online check for visa-exempt visitors similar to the US ESTA. The government’s immigration plan, published in July 2026, targets a launch by the end of fiscal year 2028. No fee has been confirmed; media reports mention around ¥2,000–3,000.
For now, nothing changes: Indonesian e-paspor holders still use JAVES registration. Be careful of websites already selling “JESTA” applications, because the official system does not exist yet.
Japan Visa Waiver for Indonesians FAQ
Is the Japan visa waiver free for Indonesians?
Yes. Registering an e-paspor through the online JAVES system is free. If you register in person through the Japan Visa Application Centre, only the centre’s service fee applies.
How long can I stay in Japan with the visa waiver?
Up to 15 days per visit, counting the day you arrive. You can visit as many times as you like while the registration is valid.
How long is the visa waiver registration valid?
Three years from approval, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. A new passport needs a new registration.
How long does JAVES registration take?
Usually about 2–4 working days online. Apply at least two weeks before your flight to be safe, especially before holidays.
Can I use the visa waiver with a non-electronic passport?
No. The waiver only works with an Indonesian e-paspor that has the chip symbol on the cover. With an older passport you need a tourist visa, which costs ¥15,000 for a single entry from 1 July 2026.
Do I need to print the registration notice?
The online registration notice is electronic and is shown from your phone. Keep mobile data or Wi-Fi available at check-in and immigration, and bring a printout of your flight and hotel bookings as backup.
